Video Taped Interview of Scarborough Rapist

Paul Bernado known as Canada's "Scarborough Rapist" was recently interviewed regarding the disappearance of college student Elizabeth Bain in 1990.  The courts have released transcripts and the video tape of Bernardo's interview.

Bernardo was suspected of committing 14 rapes and brags that he did 30.  Some of the rapes he committed occurred after he married Karla Homolke who was also convicted for helping lure his victims.

Check out the video of Bernado's recent interview about the disappearance of Elizabeth Bain.

In particular notice Bernardo's response to Det. Brad Hoover asking if he murdered Bain.

Canada.com has an additional story about Bernardo and his taped interview.

Check Paul Bernardo on Wikipedia for more story.

Another example of why taping of interviews and interrogations is important.

Video Tape Interrogation in Child Death Trial Will Make the Difference

I have been casually following a child death case in Richmond, Kentucky.  A 2 year old child Callie Robinson had numerous cuts, bruises, scraps, and burns over her body.  Her mother said Callie's death was due to her boyfriend wrapping her too tightly in a blanket.

Verona Brinegar said she told her boyfriend to stop after she found bruises in her daughter's ears. Verona also said in her video taped interrogation that the burns on the bottoms of the child's feet came from the wall sockets.  Brinegar's 4 year old son supposedly repeatedly removed the covers from the wall sockets and Callie had put her feet up against the sockets.

Obviously the medical examiner's  LONG testimony refuted all those ridiculous claims.

I think was is really going to make a big impact in this case is that Richmond, KY PD  video taped the house / crime scene.  More importantly they video taped Verona Brinegar's interrogation documenting her absurd explanation of her daughter's injuries and subsequent death at the hands of her boyfriend.

The jury is not going to respond well to being lied to by Verona as if they have no common sense, especially after the M.E.'s testimony.

Think of all the cases you could have taped or could tape that would make a huge impact on the court.

Tatum O'Neal Does "research" on cocaine and crack.

You might say that Tatum O'Neal is experiencing an extreme case of denial!

Tatum O'Neal gets arrested just blocks from her apartment in New York trying to buy cocaine and crack from a street person.

O'Neal is quoted by the NYPD as saying, "You know who I am, right?"

She also told the Manhattan South Narcs "'I'm researching a part - I'm doing this for a part' " as a junkie.

O'Neal has a well documented history of drug abuse. She also said this was the "first time" she's been out after getting released from a drug treatment program.

How many times have we heard these excuses from subjects?  Her comments when she was arrested are typical of the evasive nature of bargaining by calling her actions "research" and of course the "denial" behavior that this is her "first time."  How about her "sense of entitlement" because she's Tatum O'Neal?

Sounds like treatment hasn't been working!

Jack Worthington is JFK's Love Child? - Doubt it!

We now have a guy Jack Worthington who claims he is the love child of JFK.  I picked up on the story very quickly when I first heard about it.  About 20 years ago my buddy William Owens and I investigated a similar claim but a mother and son in Maryland. Mom claimed the babies got switched at birth.

It was no surprise that everything was unfounded.  Mom always gave just enough information to make it sound credible.  She knew two or three of the right names of Secret Service agents and reporters to weave into the story to make it sound good.  The woman even got her story into the National Enquirer.  She claimed to have written documents from the Kennedy's which we determined were in her own handwriting.  We found tons more evidence of her embellishment and fabrications

As you can imagine, turned out the woman was a very histrionic - a real "drama queen."  I'd be willing to bet we're going to hear the same thing about this new claim as the heir to "Camelot."

This is typical of what I call a "hype lie."  The person creates a lot of lies that "hype" them or something they have supposedly done or accomplished.  Medal of Honor winners, named after Sr. Edmund Hillary, invented the internet.  This a common type of lie you'll find around you all the time.

Science of Interrogation: National Geographic

Science of Interrogation is currently set to air on the National Geographic Channel, Monday March 10th an 8 PM ET.

I was pleased to work as a technical adviser on the project and serve as a contributing host for the program.  The program explores current research including false confessions, and the fMRI as a device for detecting deception.  The crew portions of a class I taught at Nebraska State Patrol in Grand Island.  We also went to Hall County Jail and conducted some inmate interviews.  I then spent about 8 hours taping a segment during which I did some analysis of major case interrogations including Gary Ridgeway, "The Green River Killer,", two other murder cases and a kidnapping case in Hopkinsville, KY in which I was involved.

The producer Stuart Tanner is very excited about the finished work.  I've also been asked to serve as a spokesperson for the program and anticipate doing some news coverage.

Monday March 10th at 8 PM ET on the National Geographic Channel.  Should be a good show.  I hope it turns out as well as the taping sessions we did.

Phony Biographies: Lying & Deception in Print

In the last couple of weeks, we've learned again that publishers are not very discriminating on who they publish.  More importantly,  they are absolutely worthless in spotting deception.  Yet, they are the first to tell us how we everyone else is wrong and misinformed.

It's happened again!  After three years of working with her, Penguin books has learned that Love and Consequences which is about the gang life of Margaret Seltzer (writing as Margaret B. Jones) is a complete fraud.  Seltzer still tries to salvage the charade by saying her work is based on the life experiences of several friends.  Just a few weeks ago "Misha: A Mémoire of the Holocaust Years" by Misha Defonseca turned out to be a fake.   Two years ago Ms. Oprah got burned by the fraudulent book "A Million Pieces" written by James Frey.

I thought publishers, newspaper and journalists had a code of conduct.  One of which is to verify all sources.   Makes you wonder what else they publish that is untrue.  Funny how the rest of us poor readers in the public are just dupes and have to been told what to think by the enlightened media.

Time they should learn how to spot deception.

Drew Peterson's Ego Will Bury Him

The last couple of weeks has confirmed in my mind even more that Peterson is just like OJ Simpson.  I predicted years ago that OJ would do something shocking like saying "Okay, I killed her and here's how.  What are you going to do now?"  He book "If I Did It..." was that moment.

Drew Peterson's ego is going to bury him.  He'll do something or say something just as dumb and reckless as OJ.  He talked to Matt Lauer about wanting the press off his back yet, what has he done?  He calls a radio show and talks about doing "Get a Date With Drew."  He has allegedly contacted FOX about going on the new show Moment of Truth and volunteers for a polygraph, BUT won't take one given by the police or FBI.

Drew Peterson's ego driven acts are going to bury him.  He is going to say or do something that will be his death knell if and when he is caught and tried.  His search for attention and some BIG screw up out there on the horizon is coming.

Course... just my opinion of what I call an ego dominant personality.

What O J Simpson and Drew Peterson Have in Common.

If we review the interrogation personalities that we discuss in our
Practical Kinesic Interview & Interrogation® courses we find that
OJ and Drew share a lot of common characteristics from the Ego
Dominant Personality Interrogation type.

1. Listen to how both OJ and Drew treat anyone who challenges
them or asks them questions.  Both are very quick to put those
people in their place and dismiss them and their comments as
being insignificant.  Note that their rejection of these people
has nothing to do with facts, just the person.

2. Both OJ and Drew blame everyone else for their problems.  OJ
blames Nichol and her family and friends.  Drew blames both his
dead wife and missing wife for all his marital problems.

3. Both OJ and Drew blame their victims.  It's as if in both cases
the situations are direct results of what the victims did or did not
do.

4. Both appear to do some very bizarre and impractical things.
OJ goes to a Las Vegas hotel room and expects none of the other
5 people to say anything about him being there or guns being
involved nor that it could be construed as kidnapping or robbery.
Drew allegedly gets his half-brother to help him move the "blue
barrel" as well as possibly gets two different truck drivers to move
the "blue barrel" for him to a dump location.

5.  Both men blame the media and their bias for their situation.
The media is to blame for all the hysteria around their cases.

6. Both men come up with some bizarre thinking and explanations.
Drew has no explanation why a "good mother" just leaves and
doesn't call to tell her children not to worry.  OJ says "they had my
stuff."

7. Drew contends that his wife just ran away with another man and
has no explanation why she doesn't call.  Even though we
have the tape of OJ screaming and cursing at his victims we're
expected to believe it wasn't a hostile confrontation.

8.  Drew thinks lawyers will all clamor to take his case and help
him.  OJ says "I'm OJ.  I'm OJ.  Everybody loves OJ."

9.  Drew says that the email his missing wife sent about her fear of
him is fake, a forgery and not her words.  OJ says the photos of
him wearing the shoes similar to those that found in the blood on
the scene and at his house are forgeries and fraud and the actions
of racists cops.  OJ says the pictures Nichol had in her safe
deposit box that shows her injuries are all posed, fake photos.

10. Drew says the cops instantly made him a suspect and that
they
have zeroed in just on him.  OJ says the cops just wanted to frame
him and he's the only suspect they ever had.

11.  Both OJ and Drew treat their cases as nothing more than a
tempest in a tea kettle and that everything will go away just
because of who they think they are.

Before both of these cases are done and over with we are going
to get some more bizarre and damning behavior for both men.
Eventually it will be the egos of both OJ and Drew that will do
them in. It'll be their ego dominant behaviors when they committed
their alleged crimes OR it will be the idiotic things they both say or
do during the ongoing investigations, stupid things they will say
when interviewed or make statements to the media or during any
subsequent grand jury, hearings or trial.

Also make no mistake.  They have their loyal sycophants that are
going to hang around and loyally support each man denouncing
the horrible injustices of both these cases.

Well, at least this is just my opinion anyway!

Drew Peterson's Interview by Matt Lauer - Behavior Analysis

Cop Drew Peterson was interviewed by Today Show's Matt Lauer
and I've already had some media asking about Peterson's
behaviors.

Here are a few quick things I noticed.

1. Peterson's body language is pretty controlled.  That in itself
could be a sign of stress but Peterson is pretty confident and
should have plenty of experience in the hot seat as an interviewer
and testifying in court so I'm not surprised.  He does appear by his
posture to exhibit a certain amount of arrogance.  But that in itself
does not mean he is being deceptive.  I did pick up the "stress
clicking" from his tongue and cheeks being dry from stress.  This
is a physiological change but NOT and indicator of deception.  He
may be calm and controlled on the outside, BUT he may be
undergoing some severe internal stress.

2. When Peterson as asked in the relationship with his wife was
violent Peterson responded with an "I don't know" answer and also
said "I don't believe it was ever violent."  In my opinion that's a
cluster of behavior consistent of someone withholding information.
He was asked if he ever hit her but there was no camera on him at
the time of his response.  He does blame her for hitting him with a
steak. (That's gotta be a felony!)

3. When Lauer asked if she told him there was another man he
responded that she didn't tell him there was another man but then
said "Well, maybe she did" and he quotes her as saying she found
someone else.  He has to come up with that because his whole
defense is that she has run away with someone else.

4. When Peterson was asked if his wife was a good Mom he
responded very positively. In fact he called her a "great Mom."
When asked why a great Mom would disappear and not call to
check on her young children or let them know she was okay all
Peterson could come up with was "I don't know. I can't explain
that."

5. Peterson was asked about the death of his 3rd wife and the fact
he was on the scene, did it look like an accidental drowning to
him. Peterson responded "I didn't know if she was dead or alive. I
felt her pulse and being a policeman I left things alone."  Notice he
didn't answer the question.  (Just as an aside.  Savio's death was
ruled as an accidental drowning although the bath tube was empty,
she had a one inch cut on her head and her hair was matted with
blood.  If she was drowning in the tub, wouldn't the water soak the
blood out of her hair? Further she would already be dead if and
when the water drained out of the tub. How could she bleed more
after being dead?  I'm not a crime scene expert, BUT....)

6. I find it interesting that Peterson blames both women for the
problems they had in their relationships.  It's amazing how often it's
the victim's fault.  He blames the problems with BOTH women as
being a result of their menstrual cycle.  Uh huh...

7. One REAL big telltale sign that caught my attention.  He
obviously talks about Savio in past tense - she's dead.  BUT he
also talks about Stacy in past tense but she's supposed to have
run away with another man! He talks about that she "would" ask for
a divorce or she "used" to do something.  In my opinion in his
mind he believes she's dead.

8. When Lauer asks if Peterson is surprised that he is a suspect,
Peterson responds that the husband is always the suspect and
when would he not be one.  Yep, let's all ignore the elephant in the
room but act like it's not unusual for it to be there.  This appears to
be one of our guilt phrases we learn about in class.

9. When asked why Stacy's sisters said she wanted to get away
from him and if she didn't call to start looking for her, Peterson
blames the media for putting the idea in her head and then brings
up Geraldo Rivera.

10.  When he was read the email that Stacy wrote to her sisters,
he said it's a fake, just like the rest of the stuff.  Just like the blood
was planted at OJ's crime scene and house.  Must be a
conspiracy.  More evasion by Peterson using Anger.

11. Peterson had an AMAZING response when Lauer mentioned
that if tried and convicted Peterson could get life or even the death
penalty. Peterson acts like he's made his peace and is ready to
go!  Talks about his kids will be taken care of and everything will
be fine.  Sounds like a terminal cancer patient preparing to die!  In
my opinion this is an act on his part to show I've not afraid of
anything!

12. Now I find it interesting that all this happened just at the point
she was going to start or had started divorce proceedings.  I can't
imagine why that would not be some kind of motive for him!

13.  Finally (interesting that this is the 13th point) and this one is
big to me, Peterson said "she is where she wants to be."  Well if
she wanted to be away from him wouldn't "dead" be a way to be
where she wants to be - "away" from him.  I find that a very telling
statement.

Now, do yourself a favor.  Google the name Sam Parker.  Parker
is a 26 year cop in Walker County Georgia whose wife has been
missing since March 2007.  FInd and watch the full video interview
of him by FOX in Atlanta.  See if this story sounds familiar. He
says his wife is actually hiding somewhere.  He claims she has run
off with someone and has been caught in an affair.  They was just
getting a divorce and he was to pay her $20,000 the day she
disappeared.  He blames the media, Cops and FBI for all the
hysteria around his case.  Sounds familiar?  There must be a
common script these 2 guys used.

In terms of Matt Lauer's interview. He did fine considering what he
had to work with.  I'm not at all a big fan of Matt Lauer but I imagine
there were some pretty strict ground rules about what Matt could
and could not ask.

Watch this case.  It would be interesting to see how the new
autopsy comes out on Savio. I'd be interested in any more
statements Peterson makes although I doubt he'll talk anymore.

Love to hear your comments!

Barry Bonds Indicted for Lying

Barry Bonds indictment for four counts of perjury should be no surprise to anyone. Nearly four years ago when I heard Bond's testimony before the grand jury, I believed then that he exhibited clusters of behavior consistent with someone who was withholding information. One of Bonds' amazing statements came when he was asked if personal trainer Greg Anderson have given him steroids. Bonds response was "Not that I know of." This is just one of the many smae types of cues we cover in class. Bonds by the way eventually tested positve for steroids. Really! You think! After his testimony, Bonds engages in more behavior that I believe is consistent with someone withholding information. He blames the media for creating the controversy. My answer is "No Barry. The media didn't give you the steroids that you didn't know about." Let's all watch and see if Bonds and his attorney(s) spin anymore interesting statements for us to diagnose.
